Quick, no prep activities for fall speech therapy – just print and go! Students describe, answer questions, and demonstrate comprehension using 4 real-life photographs depicting a Pumpkin Patch, Haunted House, Trick-or-Treating, and Thanksgiving dinner. Each photograph is accompanied by several prompts that can be used for speaking (or writing!). Each prompt includes target vocabulary to encourage vocabulary that is relevant and specific. Each photograph is also accompanied by several WH questions about the topic of the photograph. Finally, each photograph is accompanied by a short (app. 300 words) story and comprehension questions. Comprehension can be targeted orally, as only the photograph is presented to the student, or in writing, as both the photograph and story are presented.

Reading books with our students is important, but finding time to indulge in literacy when you’re limited to a 30-60 minute therapy session is hard! Picture books are often a great choice for shorter time frames, but many activities created for them focus on functional skills or skills for younger students. With my 3rd graders and up in mind, I decided to work on creating materials for older students that can accompany picture books.

This unit focuses on 4 areas of instruction: comprehension, vocabulary, grammar/sentence structure, and social skills.

There are 3 types of activities in this unit for Pumpkin Town:

1 | Worksheets

There are 2 worksheets for each area of instruction. The worksheets are set up to be able to naturally divide the book into 2 sessions, if desired, with one worksheets for each half of the book.

2 | Task/Sorting Cards

The task/sorting card activities are set up similar to the worksheets, with the ability to divide into 2 sessions.

3 | Writing Pages

The writing pages provide a little more variety. Retell, narrative writing, comparing and contrasting, and creating lists can be used across 2 sessions or at the end of the book.
